Walking, wildlife and the Westfjords

Reykjavik - Reykjavik, Iceland
6th May 2018 - 11th May 2018

Join us for this 5 night exploration of the Westfjords, included a guided walk, and sailing out to hopefully catch a glimpse of the Whales.  The Westfjords is almost a separete island, and legend has it that three trolls spent a night digging through a narrow isthmus to create an island, but were turned to stone at sunrise.

This voyage is not just about the sailing but also a taster to the fantastic walks available in The Westfjords.

Day 1.  Arrival in Reykjavik

Arriving in Reykkavik on the Sunday afternoon, you will have Sunday to explore the capital city, returning to the ship that evening for a delicious 3 course meal and time to get to know the other guests and crew members.

Day 2.  Sailing day from Reykjavik - Anchorage off Snaefellsjokull

Today will be spent getting to grips with sailing Blue Clipper.  You can help hoist the sails, climb the rigging and take the helm as we navigate our way North.  This will also be a great opportunity to photograph the Icelandic landscape from a completely unique viewpoint.  We will anchor that eveing off Snaefellsjokull, with the possibility to explore ashore.

Day 3.  Sailing day exploring the Wesfjords.

Another day sailing, exploring the Breioafjordur.  There may be the opportunity to jump ashore and explore the Island of Flatey.  Half of the bird species that breed in Iceland have been spotted on the Island, so don't forget your binoculars!  We then head further North, to anchor off Brunnaverstod.

Day 4.  Walk.  Brunnaverstod and Latrabjarg (20km)

Today you will spend the day onshore, with a walk around Brunnaverstod and Latrabjarg.  This is a 12.5mile walk of mainly coastal cliff paths, stony slopes and dirt roads.  The total ascent on this walk is 500m. This walk will take us to latrabjarg bird cliffs, one of the most amazing locations in Iceland to see birdlife.  In spring and early summer there are many different types of birds here, including the Puffin.  The Latrabjarg Bird Cliffs are one of the most Western points in Europe and they also happen to be the largest bird cliffs in Europe.  These cliffs are home to a dizzying amount of birds including puffins, razorbils, arctic terns, snipes, snow buntings and white tailed eagles.

Day 5.  Sailing from Brunnaverstod - Reykjavik

Today we spend our time at sea, crossing back across the Breidafjordur.  This is the broad waterway separating the Snaefellsnes from the looming cliffs of the distant Wesfjords.  Accoring to local legend, there are only two things in the world that cannot be counted; the stars in the night sky and the craggy islets in the bay.  What you can count on, is epic vistas and a menagerie of wild birds.

Day 6.  Arrival in Reykjavik for departure.
